M.Sc. (Gold Medallist) and Ph.D from Banaras Hindu University. He was the Chairman of the Commission on popuilation Cartography of the International Cartographic Association (ICA) for the Period 1987-91. He was the first Indian to become chairman of an ICA Body and was also Full Member of the Commission on Population Geography of the International Geographical Union (IGU) for two terms. He has been closely associated with the international activities related to geography and cartography, such as a Member of the International Working Group on the Thematic Maps of the world, and a Member of the Editorial Board of the International Journal of the Geographical Information Systems. He has been a Senior Visiting Member of the Staff of the School of Oriental African Studies, University of London.
